چکیده

A series of experiments is presented which demonstrate significant drag reduction for the laminar flow of water through microchannels using hydrophobic surfaces with well-defined micron-sized surface roughness. These ultrahydrophobic surfaces are fabricated from silicon wafers using photolithography and are designed to incorporate precise patterns of microposts and microridges which are made hydrophobic through a chemical reaction with an organosilane. An experimental flow cell is used to measure the pressure drop as a function of the flow rate for a series of microchannel geometries and ultrahydrophobic surface designs. Pressure drop reductions up to 40% and apparent slip lengths larger than 20 mm are obtained using ultrahydrophobic surfaces. No drag reduction is observed for smooth hydrophobic surfaces. A confocal surface metrology system was used to measure the deflection of an air–water interface that is formed between microposts and supported by surface tension. This shear-free interface reduces the flow resistance by allowing the fluid to contact only a very small effective area of the silicon surface. The impact of the surface topology on the drag reduction is explored in detail and the results are found to be in good qualitative agreement with the predictions of analytical theory. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Enhanced mixing in laminar flows using ultrahydrophobic surfaces.

Under laminar, microscale flow conditions, rapid mixing can be difficult to achieve. In these low Reynolds number flows, mixing rates are governed by molecular diffusion, and in the absence of enhanced mixing techniques, mixing lengths and residence times can be much longer than most applications will allow. A number of active mixing techniques have been developed to improve mixing; however, th...

Direct velocity measurements of the flow past drag-reducing ultrahydrophobic surfaces

A series of experiments are presented which study the flow kinematics of water past drag-reducing superhydrophobic surfaces. The ultrahydrophobic surfaces are fabricated from silicon wafers using photolithography and are designed to incorporate precise patterns of micrometer-sized ridges aligned in the flow direction. The ridges are made hydrophobic through a chemical reaction with an organosil...

Correction to Drag Reduction using Lubricant-Impregnated Surfaces in Viscous Laminar Flow.

Lubricant-impregnated surfaces (LIS), where micro/nanotextured surfaces are impregnated with lubricating liquids, have received significant attention for their robust, superslippery properties. In this study, we systematically demonstrate the potential for LIS to reduce drag in laminar flows. We present a scaling model that incorporates the viscosity of the lubricant and elucidates the dependen...

A NUMERICAL STUDY OF SINGLE-PHASE FORCED CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER WITH FLOW FRICTION IN MICROCHANNELS (RESEARCH NOTE)

Three-dimensional simulations of the single-phase laminar flow and forced convective heat transfer of water in microchannels with small rectangular sections having specific hydraulic diameters and distinct geometric configurations were investigated numerically. The numerical results indicated that the laminar heat transfer was to be dependent upon the aspect ratio and the ratio of the hydraulic...

Numerical simulation of microflow over superhydrophobic surfaces by lattice Boltmann method

The superhydrophobicity of a microchannel is determined by not only the wettability of channel wall but also the surface topography. Recent experiments have found that superhrydrophobic surfaces can be achieved by pattering roughness on hydrophobic surfaces. In this paper, the dynamics of two-phase flow in microchannel with different wettability and topography is studied numerically by the latt...
